Vagrant Queen to Become SYFY TV Series

Vault Comics and Blue Ice Pictures are proud to announce that SYFY has picked up the live-action series Vagrant Queen, based on Vault's comic book series of the same name. Written by Eisner and GLAAD Media Award-nominated author Magdalene Visaggio (Kim & Kim, Eternity Girl, Transformers vs. Visionaries), and illustrated by Jason Smith.

Vagrant Queen is the story of Elida, a former child queen driven from her throne and forced to wander the galaxy as she evades the revolutionaries who continue to hunt her down. Elida has built a life as a scavenger and outlaw, when an old frenemy, Isaac, turns up with news about her long-lost mother. Against her better judgment, she is forced to return to her broken kingdom in hopes of staging a rescue before a deadly foe from childhood, Commander Lazaro, can find her.

Adriyan Rae (Light as a Feather, Atlanta) is cast as the lead role of Elida, Tim Rozon (Diggstown, Wynonna Earp, Schitt’s Creek) as Isaac, and Paul du Toit (Maze Runner) as Lazaro.

Vagrant Queen characters

“The one thing I always wanted Vagrant Queen to be,” says author Magdalene Visaggio, “was a space opera that didn't take itself too seriously. Let other people have prophecies and Chosen Ones and restoring the ancient throne; I wanted to do a book about someone running from the past instead of eager to uncover it, where the mystery wasn't in some mystical power or forgotten legend, but in a young woman struggling to make her own way in the universe.”

With principal photography slated for July 2019 in Cape Town, Vagrant Queen will be produced by Blue Ice Pictures with Lance Samuels (Goalie, The Indian Detective, Madiba) and Daniel Iron (Goalie, Anthropocene: The Human Epoch, The Indian Detective) as executive producers as well as F.J. DeSanto and Damian Wassel from Vault Comics, and Dan March from Dynamic Television. offers some additional info on the series and directors.

“I had so much fun making Vagrant Queenand hopefully that came through in the finished product,” says artist Jason Smith. “The comic ended up being this cool mix of the things that we both love in sci-fi, space operas, pulp stories and comic books. I'm so excited to see this get adapted to the screen.”

“The Vault team couldn’t be more excited to see Vagrant Queen on TV,” says Vault’s CEO and Publisher Damian Wassel. “It’s a major milestone for the series creators, and a major milestone for Vault. We built this company to elevate new and important storytellers, and it’s awesome to see series from one of our most diverse creative teams hit the screen first.”
